The purpose of the NAXSA Engineering Guidelines Committee is to study relevant shoring industry engineering issues and standard practices, clarify them and issue NAXSA-approved recommendations
NAXSA Approved Shoring Shield Tab Data Sheet
Shortly after the formation of NAXSA, one of the first projects the NAXSA Engineering Committee took on was to develop a standardized tabulated data sheet for trench shields. Trench shields are manufactured by many different companies throughout the United States and Canada. As required by OSHA Subpart P each manufacturer issues tabulated data for their product. The amount of information, terminology, basis of the data, and notes given on those data sheets varies significantly. Establishing a standard shield data sheet that provides everyone using it with a clear understanding of the information necessary and how to apply it would provide a baseline for the competent person and the persons reviewing it for conformance to what is installed in the field. The standard data sheet would be posted on the NAXSA website to be used as a minimum standard for teaching and interpretation. The data sheet form would be issued to manufacturers of shoring shields for placement of their address, logo and fill in of the data.
Formation goals were:
- Must be presented in a clear and concise on one 8 1/2 x 11 sheet
- Must have a descriptive drawing, tabulated data and notes
- Must have full acceptance and agreement of all committee members
- Must have acceptance by all NAXSA member shield manufacturers
The process took over two years with committee conference calls approximately every 3 months.
The NAXSA Shoring Shield Tab Data Sheet was approved in August 2018.
