Steve Joseph Markonich

Steve J. Markonich, age 95, peacefully passed away on April 14, 2020 at home in Glendale CA. Steve was born on December 26th 1924 in Eagle Rock, CA. He was the son of Helen and Joseph Markonich. Steve grew up in Los Angeles and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his time in the Navy, Steve went to and graduated from Occidental College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He soon became a primary school teacher before making his transition into what became his lifetime career of serving the construction industry.

That transition began with Steve taking over his father’s business, a blacksmithing shop, which opened in 1922. He expanded that business aimed at pipeline contractors and renamed it Stemar Equipment and Supply Company. His focus was safety for those in that industry and the emerging codes that governed the use of protective shoring systems, which was relatively new at the time. Steve used the phrase “If you dig a ditch – call Markonich” to sum up that he was there to serve an industry he loved.

Steve was an avid golfer and belonged to Oakmont Country club in Glendale, CA. for 50 years.

He was proceeded in death by Barbara Markonich, his wife of 32 years. They had a wonderful marriage, and both often said they had found the love of their life.

He survived by his sons, Steven Markonich, James Markonich, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A celebration of life will be set at a later date.
