Session 2A
Trench Fatalities – What Does the Data Tell Us?
presented by Steve Hanley, General Manager, Vestek Industries

Total trench fatalities each year in the U.S. are often exaggerated in the many Excavation Safety Training classes given by qualified trainers in the business. Years ago, it was hard to find and summarize trench fatalities for the purpose of learning the elements of trenching incidents.

Today, OSHA reports serious trench injuries and fatalities in a Search tool available on their website. But gleaning useful data can be like hitting a moving target. In this session, we will use the tool and dissect the incidents reported for the last three years, 2015-2017. Then we will suggest conclusions which may be used to inform the industry of ways to reduce incidents and OSHA fines.
